Richard Smith, a professor emeritus with the School of Education’s Department of Curriculum and Instruction, has published a new book titled, “Tales from a Twilight House.”
A collection of poems and short stories, Smith’s book reflects upon growing old in a community of peers. He also discusses the benefits of living in a continuing care retirement community — or what he refers to fondly as a “twilight house” – where members share fond memories and comfort those who are lonely.
“Those of us who are here are in our sunset years,” says Smith, who retired from the School of Education in 1990. “The sun still shines on us, but the night is not far away. We stand together as survivors of a generation quickly becoming history. And in a twilight house, we stand together.”
The poems and stories were first published by Smith in resident newsletters, often chronicling changes in society, or reflecting on relationships Smith has enjoyed over the years with his wife, children, teachers, and others.
“Tales from a Twilight House” became available in bookstores and online on April 24. Learn more via this Koehler Books web page.
