On Wisconsin features review of ‘Home Made,’ by Liz Hauck

The Winter 2021 issue of On Wisconsin magazine features a review of a book by UW–Madison alumna and current School of Education student Liz Hauck, exploring “the philosophical implications of dinner.”

Home Made by Liz Hauck book coverHauck, who earned her master’s degree from UW–Madison in 2017, is currently a PhD candidate in educational policy studies and history.

Titled “Home Made: A Story of Grief, Groceries, Showing Up — and What We Make When We Make Dinner,” Hauck’s book reflects on how she honored her father’s legacy by hosting a weekly cooking program at “the House,” the residential home for boys in state care where her father had spent his career prior to his untimely passing.

“What starts with easy meals and skeptical participants quickly becomes a master class in forging connections, finding grace, and practicing gratitude — an experience that is as nourishing as the food the group prepares,” writes On Wisconsin.

“We know that systems fail,” writes Hauck in “Home Made.” “But food is revolutionary.”
