UW–Madison’s Aydin Bal has received the Distinguished Researcher from Underrepresented Groups Award from the Council for Exceptional Children (CEC).

The CEC is the primary professional organization for disability research and the field of special education.
Bal is a professor with the School of Education’s Department of Rehabilitation Psychology and Special Education, as well as the the interim faculty director of the School of Education’s Global Engagement Office.
This award was given as a recognition of Bal’s overall work on addressing racial disparities through justice-oriented school-family-community-university coalitions. Bal’s research focuses on the interplay among culture, learning, and mental health across local and global education systems.
Bal was formally presented the award at the 2023 CEC Convention, which was held March 1-4 in Louisville, Kentucky.
