UW–Madison’s Shawn Anthony Robinson, a senior research associate with Wisconsin’s Equity and Inclusion Laboratory (Wei LAB) housed in the School of Education’s Wisconsin Center for Education Research, along with his collaborators are the recipients of a Wisconsin Innovation Award for their “Dr. Dyslexia Dude” graphic novels.
Robinson is a co-author of the series, with Inshirah Robinson and illustrator Brandon Hadnot. The graphic novels share a compelling story about an African-American boy who is a colorful superhero with dyslexia. The capped character is autobiographically based on Shawn Robinson’s early life experiences.
“It is our wish that this honor inspires students with dyslexia in special education who feel hopeless to always believe in themselves,” says Robinson. “We want kids to take risks, chase their dreams, and embrace their creativity, in and outside of the classroom.”
Robinson adds that the series “is an expression of innovation that is culturally responsive, authentic, inclusive, and equity promoting.”
“We aim to empower all students with dyslexia, and especially Black and Brown boys,” he says.
The Wisconsin Innovation Awards highlight and honor the development of groundbreaking and innovating ideas, and seek to celebrate and inspire innovation statewide. Robinson’s project is among nine winners who were honored at the 2022 awards celebration at Memorial Union. The winners were chosen from 30 finalists and 300 nominees from across the state.
