UW-Madison’s Kelli Koltyn and Kevin Crombie recently participated in a symposium titled “Exercise and the Endocannabinoid System: Implications for Mental Health” at the annual meeting of the American College of Sports Medicine in Orlando, Florida.
Koltyn is a professor with the School of Education’s Department of Kinesiology, while Crombie is a graduate student with the department. Koltyn’s research focuses on the psychobiological effects of exercise with a primary focus on health promotion. She also works to understand the relationship between physical activity and pain, specifically the pain-relieving effects of physical activity.
The goal of the symposium was to provide an overview of the endocannabinoid system and research conducted examining exercise, endocannabinoids, and psychological outcomes.
Koltyn summarized the research conducted with healthy adults while Crombie focused his presentation on exercise, endocannabinoids, and psychological outcomes in clinical samples (e.g., adults with major depressive disorder, substance use disorder or PTSD).
