The School of Education’s Rigoletto Lopez made a unique contribution to the Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra’s (WCO) recent performance of the world premiere of Bill Banfield’s Symphony No. 8 on Jan. 28.

Rigoletto, a recent UW–Madison graduate and communications specialist with the School of Education’s Office of Professional Learning and Community Education (PLACE), was asked to create a visual collage to accompany the orchestra’s performance of Banfield’s symphony, called “Here I Stand.”

As the WCO’s composer in residence, Banfield wrote “Here I Stand” to celebrate the life of the brilliant musician, actor, athlete and blacklisted activist Paul Robeson.

“This was such an exciting project to be a part of, to share this story,” Lopez said in a Wisconsin State Journal article highlighting his work with the orchestra. The “visual aspect (is meant to) give more context to the emotion of the piece that is already there, and just add to it.”
