Li Chiao-Ping Dance (LCPD) proudly presents “Here Lies the Truth” March 25-26 at the Overture Center for the Arts.
This work of multidisciplinary dance theater is an exciting mixed-media collaboration between visual artist Douglas Rosenberg, a professor in the School of Education’s Art Department; sound designer/composer Tim Russell, a faculty member in the School of Education’s Dance Department; dramaturg Cláudia Tatinge Nascimento; and choreographer Li Chiao-Ping, the Sally Banes Professor of Dance and a Vilas Research Professor in the Dance Department.
The collaborators investigate “truth” as it relates to positionality, power, access, and equity. Employing hyperbole, absurdity, and raw dance/physical theater, “Here Lies the Truth” has brought together a powerful cast of dancers from across the county to perform their truths, share their stories, and be seen in their identities in radical acts on stage.
“Here Lies the Truth” complicates the simplistic and simplifies the complex. The essence of this work is grounded in the truths we hold in our bodies: a deep knowing that is felt and sensed. Born from a commitment to telling personal truths, the collaboration has led to the re-examining of narratives put forth by those in power and those put forth by our own biases. We continue to investigate how to cope with such dissonance. With so much laid bare and little sense of justice, a community of movers sorts through these murky layers of truths, half-truths, and untruths.
In addition to the collaborators, “Here Lies the Truth” features guest dance artists including JP Alejandro, Alfonso Cervera, Kimi Evelyn, Elisabeth Roskopf, and Abbi Stickels alongside LCPD’s talented company dancers.
The performance welcomes people of all ages, experiences, and identities to join in this investigation, conversation, and movement, literally.
Performances will take place on Friday, March 25, at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday, March 26, at 2 and 7:30 p.m. LCPD welcomes all to join a “Pre-Show Flow” movement class at on March 26 at 11:30 a.m., prior to the performance. There will also be a special free performance on March 25 at 10 a.m. for local school groups and youth organizations.
