Following is a Q&A with Victoria Ruiz de la Vega, who is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Health Promotion and Health Equity (HPHE) with a certificate in Dance Movement Therapy and graduating in spring 2026.

Victoria Ruiz de la Vega is a School of Education student majoring in Health Promotion and Health Equity.

Where are you from? How did you become interested in pursuing a degree in this field?

I’m from Madison and became interested in the HPHE program because I knew I wanted to work in the healthcare field, but was not sure in what direction. When I heard about this degree I loved how versatile it was! Through the program, I have received such a unique perspective into the health field that I will take with me post-graduation.

How did you decide that you wanted to become a UW–Madison Badger?

I was born and raised in Madison so the Badger spirit was all around me growing up. In my kindergarten “All About Me” project, my goal was to attend UW–Madison. There was no doubt in my mind that this is the school for me.

What has been your most meaningful experience in the HPHE program?

Being part of the HPHE program I have gotten such an amazing opportunity to build connections with professors, TAs, and classmates. Through my classes I always get to see a familiar, friendly face while meeting so many new amazing people, which is especially important on UW’s big campus!

Have you had an impactful internship or field experience? If so, can you tell us about that experience?

I have been very blessed to be part of the HOPE Internship which helps college students find a career in healthcare. Through the internship I have met so many amazing providers and professors that have played a key role in my career story. During summer 2024 I found my passion for occupational therapy and dream of furthering my graduate education here in Madison.

Can you tell us about a time when an academic adviser helped you?

On the first day at SOAR I met program adviser, Zoe Hurley, and she was such a joy to work with! She helped me enroll in my courses and get excited about my college experience. She was instrumental in guiding me through a new and overwhelming process.

What are your future goals or plans?

My dream is to become an occupational therapist and give back to my community in Madison. This is especially important to me as a first-generation student.

Anything else you value about the School of Education or your program that you’d like to share with others who are considering it?

Being part of the School of Education has been such an amazing experience! There are so many amazing staff and advisers you can go to for help, and they will make sure you feel confident for what is to come.

What are some tips that you have for anyone starting college/transferring to a new one?

Get involved on campus and find what you are passionate about. Building community and relationships with your peers with your same interests will be great motivators. Also, go to your professors’ and adviser’s office hours to get to know them. You may learn so much and they can help you when it comes to finding the career you want to pursue.

What are some tips that you have for current students who are trying to maximize their experience?

Join clubs and organizations that interest you, both as hobbies and career-wise. The relationships developed through both are ones you will always cherish. Go out in the community and volunteer, you won’t regret it!
